Recycled Glass Beads - Ghana- Meet the Fair Trade Artisans
Beadmaking is a longstanding tradition throughout much of West Africa, and women of the Krobo Bead Co-op, Global Mamas and Somanya are cleverly using the broken glass lining their towns as material for new beads.
Using fires and molds to melt the glass and shape new beads, these women are taking an age-old art and combining eco-friendly techniques that have put them on the path to self-sufficiency.
As most of the bead co-ops are women-owned and women-run (a rarity among many rural West African villages), the majority of proceeds are benefiting nutrition, health and education within the towns and securing the rights and prosperity of women in Ghana.
Support these artisans by buying their products in our fair trade store.
